Why does water enter the screw air compressor oil and gas barrel

Why does water enter the screw air compressor oil and gas barrel
July 01, 2024

The oil-gas separation barrel of the screw air compressor is mainly used to separate compressed air and lubricating oil, making the compressed air cleaner and allowing the lubricating oil to be reused. It is a relatively common phenomenon that oil and gas separation barrels contain (enter) water, so what is the cause of water intrusion? Summarized as follows:

The outlet pipeline of the screw air compressor is equipped with a check valve. The high-temperature and high-pressure humid air is discharged through the exhaust valve of the screw air compressor, and oil and water components are still trapped after passing through the downstream cooler. Although the second and third-stage interstage coolers and the final stage cooler of the screw air compressor are equipped with air-water separators to separate the moisture generated during the compression process, the actual working effect is not ideal. Because the screw air compressor has been idle for a long time, the moisture generated by the exhaust gas accumulates around the pipeline and check valve, causing the moisture to flow back into the chassis, and the water content of the lubricating oil gradually increases, eventually causing the high-pressure screw air compressor oil level alarm and Error shutdown. When the outlet pipe of the screw air compressor was shut down and removed, it was found that a large amount of milky white liquid flowed out of the pipe, which indicated that the exhaust moisture content of the screw air compressor was seriously exceeded.

According to the operating requirements of the screw air compressor, the screw air compressor should be set to a minimum operating time to prevent the formation of condensation water, because the condensation water will cause rust of the cylinder valve plate, frame components, etc. The accumulation of condensate in the crankcase can cause erroneous oil level readings.

Water and oil cannot mix, and their presence together causes the oil to deteriorate rapidly. The lowest operating time is generally not less than 10 minutes, which should be enough to heat the screw air compressor to vaporize and condense the moisture.
