Causes of oil leakage in air compressors and corresponding solutions

Causes of oil leakage in air compressors and corresponding solutions
June 22, 2024

Air compressors are a type of equipment that is commonly used nowadays. We may encounter some problems during use, such as oil leakage, which is a serious problem. It is not only damage to the machine, but also a waste of resources. So what is the cause of oil leakage and how to solve it?

Air compressor parts have poor material or workmanship, and structural design problems; incorrect assembly process, such as unclean mating surfaces, damaged or displaced washers; uneven tightening force of tightening nuts or loosening and falling off of mechanical parts; sealing Excessive wear, aging and deterioration, deformation and failure of materials due to long-term use; Excessive addition of lubricating oil or inconsistent oil quality; Deflection and deformation of the joint surface of air compressor parts, damage to the shell, and lubricating oil leakage; Ventilation; After the plug and one-way valve are blocked, due to the sleeve Affected by the difference in air pressure between the inside and outside of the tube, oil leaks from weak seals.

1.Install the gasket correctly. Gaskets between air compressor components act as a leak-proof seal. If the materials, production quality and installation do not meet the technical specifications, it is easy to cause oil leakage.

2.Tighten the nuts correctly. If it is too loose, the gasket cannot be pressed tightly, which will cause oil leakage. If it is too tight, the metal around the screw hole will bulge, or the screw will slip, causing oil leakage.

3.Replace failed oil seals promptly. Due to improper installation of many oil seals in the air compressor, the journal and the edge of the oil seal are not concentric, resulting in oil splashing. Some oil seals will lose their elasticity due to rubber aging after being used for a long time.

4.Replace worn parts promptly. Excessive wear on air compressor parts (such as pistons and cylinders) can cause excessive wear and tear, causing high-pressure gas in the combustion chamber to break into the crankcase and force oil to leak.

5.Avoid clogging of check valves and vent valves. If the one-way valve and ventilation valve are blocked, the temperature inside the casing will rise, oil and gas will fill the entire space, increase the pressure inside the casing, increase the piston movement resistance, and increase fuel consumption. The influence of air pressure difference often leads to oil leakage due to loose sealing.

6.Ensure the sealing of various oil pipe joints. Coupling nuts used in construction machinery are often disassembled due to broken slide wires and are prone to loosening. For example, poor accuracy of the two joints, misalignment of the center lines of the two conical surfaces, or different tapers will cause oil leakage. The cone seal can be repaired by grinding to make the nut tight and sealing reliably.

7.Avoid wheel hub oil splashing. If there is too much grease in the hub bearing and cavity, or the oil seal is poorly matched and aged, the hub temperature is too high, and frequent braking causes the axle nut to loosen, it will cause the hub to fall off. . Therefore, assembly should be carried out according to technical operating specifications.
